New MATTA President

The election of Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun as the new Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president at its Extraordinary General Meeting here today is expected to end the association's internal conflict over the past six months.

Mohd Khalid who is also the president of Housecoff Travel Tours Sdn Bhd was elected to the post unanimously by the delegates and replaces caretaker president Datuk Ngiam Foon effective Jan 23.

"We carried out a fresh election as instructed by the High Court on Aug 20, after the earlier election was declared illegal due to the presence of non-eligible members.


"We also appointed an independent body, Chartered Accountant, to ensure those elected to the exco were valid members," Mohd Khalid told reporters here today.

Niam said he did not endorse the EGM held by former president Datuk Joshua Peter Tan on Dec 17, as the meeting had breached the Matta constitution because it was organised by a travel agent company and not the association.



"The 475 members who are eligible to vote should have been directors or workers in their respective companies but during the EGM in December, many of those who voted were not from travel agencies.

"We also found that the police permit for the EGM was under the Cacinjo Holidays Sdn Bhd travel agency owned by Datuk Joshua Peter Tan," he said.

On Dec 17, Joshua was elected president but the Matta executive committee deemed it illegal and subsequently, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled that Datuk Ngiam Foon would remain as caretaker president until an EGM was held.
